Herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 continue to be major human pathogens against which we lack acceptable vaccines or other means of immunological control. In this volume, leading investigators discuss the possible modes of development of HSV infections and emphasize how various aspects of immunity are thought to control the infection or, in some cases, contribute to the development of diseases. The book begins with brief overview of the regulation of gene expression by HSV, followed by a series of chapters on pathogenesis and how different aspects of specific and natural immunity play a role in controlling HSV in different disease situations.
